Woman catfished by fake ‘Stranger Things’ star Dacre Montgomery, gets divorced, sent impostor $10k

A scammer catfished a Kentucky woman, claiming he was “Stranger Things” star Dacre Montgomery.

In the end, “McKayla of Kentucky” left her husband for the scammer after the two met online and sent the fake Montgomery roughly $10,000.

According to Entertainment Weekly, McKayla claims the man told her that he and his model girlfriend Liv Pollock were on the verge of a split due to Pollock’s controlling behavior. McKayla could relate “because my ex-husband was that way.” The scammer told her, she said, that Pollock controlled his bank accounts, so she sent him money.

The real Montgomery portrays Billy Hargrove on the Netflix hit.

McKayla said she was skeptical at first that she was really communicating with the “Stranger Things” actor, but she became convinced after the scammer told her ahead of the “Dear Billy” episode of the show that Montgomery’s character was set to return for the episode.

“And he showed up in that episode,” McKayla said. “I was like, ‘Well, who else would know that?’”

The scammer would also send her poems that mirrored the writing style in Montgomery’s DKMH: Poems, a 2020 poetry collection.

“If you’re someone like me, you’re afraid of abandonment and you’re a real big people pleaser and you’re very co-dependent,” McKayla said. “These scammers, they just kind of come in and they leech off that.”
